The International High School Battle of the Bands will be happening on May 5 at .
For this year’s Battle of the Bands, we have a special cause to support: Our Learning House (OLH), a small-scale school and a rehabilitation center for disabled orphans and children in difficult situations.
Last
year, I did an internship there and volunteered after school. Thanks to
the experience, I met some amazing kids who have faced unimaginable
challenges, but still have so much love, joy, and hope in their hearts.
They taught me a lot about resilience, courage, and gratitude. Seeing
how OLH provided an environment where they could feel safe warmed my
heart. I would walk into the center each day and be met with the kind
smiles from so many of the teachers and students.
Our
Learning House provides these kids with a caring environment where they
can receive individualized education, therapy, and life skills
training. They also organize various activities and events to enrich
their lives and connect them with the community.
But
OLH needs help. They rely on donations and volunteers to keep their
doors open and their programs running. They have a lot of expenses, such
as rent, utilities, food, staff salaries, equipment, and supplies. In
addition to this, they pay for the rent for the orphaned students to
live in Beijing with a caretaker, outside of school. They also have a
lot of dreams, such as hiring more teachers and therapists, supporting
more children both inside and outside of Beijing, and creating more
opportunities for their students.
